Michael came to the Parish Church of Bedhampton - a stone and flint building,
the central arch of which is dated at 1153AD, on Saturday, 20th February and
performed a delightful programme to an audience of 81, comprising a mix of my
pupils and the parishioners of the Church.
Sanz was followed by Dowland's
Farewell. Beautifully played, and effortless
to watch - totally concealing its difficult stretches and awkward shapes -
the notes sang out into the Church with a clarity and sweetness that carried
them into each corner.
Frank Martin's Quatre
Pieces Breves was followed by Rodrigo's
En Los Trigales, and the weave of rich
chords and percussive notes had the audience in total silence. The first half
concluded with the Villa-Lobos Preludes
1, 3 and 4,
which, of course, were instantly familiar to many of my more advanced pupils,
and it left them eagerly awaiting the second half.
Michael restarted with Lauro's
Suite Velezolana and three pieces by Barrios.
I've already had an email from one of my Year 4 pupils who said that Julia
Florida was the most beautiful piece and really really touched
her.
The Granados Spanish
Dances No. 5 and 10 were very
precise indeed and the major section in number 5 was particularly fresh sounding.
Nikita Koshkin's Usher
Valse finished the programme. We thought it was going to finish
his brand new Guitar too, with the continued snapping of strings onto fingerboard!
Michael played from a mix of memory and score, and brought a
low music stand which hardly noticed. The performances from score didn't seem
any the less fluid. Michael already has quite a track record behind him, and
I felt that you all might like to make a note of his name. You see, he's quite
young, and I think you'll be hearing a little more of him in the years to
come!
